What the first lesson actually covers

The opening lesson is a short spoken exchange rather than a vocabulary list. You hear a phrase the way a Puerto Rican speaker would say it, including the reductions that make real speech hard to follow, then you answer out loud and get feedback on what you said. The aim of the first few minutes is not to teach you many words but to get one exchange to feel automatic, because that is the thing textbooks tend to skip.

Why Puerto Rican Spanish specifically

Most Spanish courses teach a neutral register that nobody speaks at home, so learners arrive in San Juan and discover that final s disappears, the d between vowels drops, and syllable-final r drifts toward l. Puerta becomes puelta, cansado becomes cansao, and para becomes pa'. None of that is careless speech; it is a regular system. Practising against the real variety from the start means you are not relearning comprehension later.

What you need to start

A browser and a microphone. There is no credit card, no trial timer, and no card required to reach the lesson. Speaking practice needs microphone permission because the feedback depends on hearing you, and you can decline it and still read and listen. An account exists only so your progress and streak persist between sessions.

If you would rather not sign up yet

Everything on this site outside the app is free to read without an account, and the written guides go deeper on grammar and pronunciation than a first lesson can. Plenty of people read the regional guides for weeks before creating an account, which is a perfectly reasonable order to do this in.
